The World of Mistfall

The Second Mist reshaped the realm, but it did not erase it. Cities endure, monsters return, and the struggle between light and shadow continues.

Timeline of Mistfall

History is remembered in eras, not years.

Time in the world of Mistfall is not measured precisely. Records were lost, rewritten, or fractured by the Second Mist. What follows is a reconstruction of major ages and turning points, drawn from surviving texts, oral traditions, and scholarly debate.

These eras describe how the world remembers itself — not necessarily how events unfolded in absolute truth.

The Age Before the Mist

Little is known of the world before the First Mist. Most accounts describe a barren realm, shaped but lifeless, awaiting form.

Whether mortals existed before the Mist is unknown. No confirmed artefacts survive from this age.

The First Mist — The Age of Creation

The First Mist gave the world life. From it came beasts, creatures of magic, and the first adventurers.

As the Mist settled, it formed streets, walls, and the foundations of what would become Nightmist. When it finally cleared, civilisation had begun.

The Age of Expansion

With the Mist gone, people spread outward. Rangers and druids explored the wilds. Knights, paladins, and clerics followed, claiming and protecting the land.

New settlements arose, including Cloud City and Northkeep. Trade flourished. For a time, balance seemed possible.

The Age of Corruption

Alongside prosperity came greed. Assassins preyed on travellers. Thieves stalked the roads. Dark alchemy and forbidden magic emerged.

The corruption of the druid Norinth marked a turning point. His fall gave rise to undead horrors, twisted creatures, and open war.

Brother fought brother. Families were torn apart. The world entered an age of sustained conflict.

The Age of Great Battles

This era is defined by siege and devastation. The defence of Northkeep, the stand of the mage Ewin, and the burning of vast plains are recorded in nearly every surviving account.

Though victories were claimed, no final triumph was achieved. Scars from this age remain etched into the land.

The Dragon War

As mortals struggled for survival, the dragons turned upon one another. What began as punishment of the lesser races escalated into a war that threatened the realm itself.

The conflict between Borealis and Kyriarchia is recorded with reverence and fear. Many accounts disagree on details, but all agree on the outcome: the world could not survive such power unchecked.

The Coming of the Second Mist

When the land itself began to fail, the Second Mist descended. Fire, ash, and ruin were swept away as the world was reshaped.

Mortals perished — and were reborn. Dragons vanished. The age of gods and cataclysm ended.

The Age of Mistfall

The current era is one of endurance. The world persists in a state of balance, neither ascending to perfection nor collapsing into oblivion.

Civilisation survives. Monsters return. Heroes rise and fall. The struggle continues — contained, but unresolved.

Whether this age will last forever, or merely until balance fails again, is unknown.
